WAV keeps the decoded audio. A higher MP3 bitrate keeps more detail and makes a larger file.

What is an audio converter?

An audio converter changes a file from one audio format to another. This one opens MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, OPUS, AAC or FLAC whenever your browser can decode the format, and it also accepts the audio track of common video files. The browser turns the file into raw audio samples, and you then save those samples as either a 16-bit WAV or an MP3. For MP3 you pick a bitrate of 128, 192, 256 or 320 kbps, and 192 kbps is the default. A higher bitrate keeps more detail and makes a larger file. The work happens on your own device with the Web Audio API and an in-browser MP3 encoder, so nothing is uploaded and no copy is kept. The converter does not create M4A, OGG, FLAC or M4R files. If a file will not open, the browser could not read its audio, and trying another browser often helps. It is free, with no account and no watermark.

How to use it

  1. Open the file Any file your browser can already play.
  2. Pick a bitrate 192 kbps is the default. Higher keeps more detail and makes a larger MP3.
  3. Download Choose WAV for a full-quality file, or MP3 when you need a smaller one. Nothing is uploaded.

What the converter does

The browser decodes the file to audio samples, then you save those samples as WAV or as MP3. It does not create M4A, OGG, FLAC or M4R. If a video or unusual file will not open, the browser could not read its audio.

FAQ

Is the file uploaded?

No. The file is decoded and converted in your browser with the Web Audio API and an in-browser MP3 encoder, so nothing is uploaded and no copy is kept. This is the main difference from converters that send your file to a server. Closing or reloading the tab discards the file. You must own the rights to the audio you convert.

Why is MP3 not identical to WAV?

MP3 is a compressed format that throws away some detail to make a smaller file, so it cannot match the original exactly. WAV keeps the decoded samples at 16-bit, so it is much larger. A higher MP3 bitrate, up to 320 kbps, keeps more detail and makes a larger file. The default is 192 kbps. Choose WAV when you need full quality.

What if decode fails?

First try the other output format, MP3 or WAV, or open the page in another browser. This tool relies on the audio decoders built into your browser, so a format that one browser cannot play may open in another. Video files depend on browser support too. If the browser cannot read the audio, the tool cannot convert it, and no upload is involved.
